Legally Change Your Name

You would think that it would be easy to legally change your name. After all, with all of the people out there getting married, a legal name change must be an almost everyday occurrence. Well, yes and no is the answer. It is easy for you to legally change your name if you are getting married or divorced. They have streamlined the process, so the legal name change forms are included as part of the marriage or divorce process. They want to make it easy for couples, because they want more people to get married. More marriages means more babies and more relatively well off households. Also more social stability, some would believe. You get the idea.

But if you want to legally change your name for your own reasons, you had best make sure that you are really determined before you go about it. They are not going to make it easy for you to legally change your name. I do not know why. It seems like it should be a right of every American to go through a legal name change with a minimum of hassle. Just because you are not a woman getting married, that does not mean that you should have to jump through hoops just to legally change your name, but there it is. Lots of hoops. A whole circus, in fact.

You are required to fill out multiple forms to legally change your name. You might even have to go before a judge before the legal name change is complete, and at the very least, the judge has to approve of the new name. You will have to take out an ad in a public newspaper, saying that you are going to legally change your name, and notify all of the relevant authorities. The whole process can take weeks, or even months, and some of the steps do often involve having to pay a fee. I guess that there is some logic to making it involved to legally change your name, as it prevents certain abuses of the system. You can not, for example, legally change your name to avoid getting caught by the authorities. On the contrary, you will find yourself quickly delivered into criminal custody once you start to legally change your name, if you are already wanted. But still, there has to be a way for them to make it easier to catch a few crooks without making it harder for you to legally change your name if you want to.

Caravan Accessories

Many people enjoy caravan holidays, either with touring caravans or on static sites. This type of vacation brings freedom and fun but there is no need to go without creature comforts. Modern caravans and caravan accessories mean that owners can enjoy a home from home at moderate prices.

To give more space and protection, there are numerous awnings, wind breaks, porch awnings and sun canopies to choose from. A caravan cover will protect against strong sunlight, dirt, bird droppings and wind and rain damage. They are usually made with nylon straps, buckles and have smooth zip openings. For security, there are hitchlocks and padlocks. Wheel clamps come in one size to fit all models of vehicle. They are designed to be easily and quickly fitted. A caravan clamp comes with a pick resistance lock, for peace of mind.

Every vehicle needs a good towing mirror and there are different kinds sold at caravan accessories stores. They should be made of sturdy material and experience minimal vibration when on the move. If the weather is good, it’s nice to sit outside, soaking up the rays or having a meal. There are plastic table and chair sets and canvas chairs for relaxing in. Unfortunately, good weather can never be guaranteed and it’s a good idea to have a heater if forced to stay indoors. Push button halogen heaters have three heat settings and a safety device that protects against overheating or the heater being knocked over. Some heaters come with remote control handsets.

Even on holiday, the chores have to be done and there are some caravan accessories that make life a little easier. The semi automatic, portable washing machine is usually around 10 liters of capacity. It’s economic to operate and can heat water up to 50 degrees. A twin tub version has a spin facility and gentle cycle. Keeping food and drink warm or cool is easy with a 24-liter fridge. It can cool to 18-20 degrees lower than surrounding temperature or warm to 50-55 degrees. It’s ideal for keeping the wine and beer chilled.

Cooking outdoors is all part of the fun. Portable gas burners are very efficient and come with a cast iron griddle, pans, windshield and carry bag. An average set will cater for six to seven people.

When arriving on the site or parking at home, it can be tricky and a bit of help is always welcome. Parking aids help to maneuver the caravan into position. It’s also important not to forget about calls of nature. Caravan toilets are probably the most important of the caravan accessories to think about!

Windshield Wipers

I could not imagine driving in the rain or snow without windshield wipers. I live in Pennsylvania and I use my windshield wipers almost every time that I drive. This may be the reason that I go through a lot of windshield wipers during the life of my car. Fortunately, my husband is in charge of purchasing auto parts in our family and this includes my very important windshield wipers.

This brilliant little invention makes it possible to navigate safely in inclement weather, but the windshield wiper is not the perfect tool. One of the most vexing things about windshield wipers includes their tendency to wear out in parts. The rubber on the windshield wiper will wear down and the wipers will leave a streak of snow or rain. This streak left by the windshield wiper is usually directly in front of the driver’s vision.

The Windshield wipers were invented by a woman named Mary Anderson in 1903. The first windshield wipers were used manually. The driver reached out of his window and moved the windshield wiper back and forth to wipe away elements like snow, dirt and rain. The windshield wiper became standard on cars back in the early 1910’s and the electric version we take for granted today was introduced years later.

My husband jokes about my obsession about windshield wipers. I usually ask for a new pair each summer and each winter. This probably is not necessary, but I like to be sure that I can see clearly in all kinds of weather. I am also very rough on my windshield wipers, too.

I love winter, but I don’t like to be cold. I also tend to do things last minute, so I don’t always give myself ample time to warm up my car before driving off. Sometimes I use the windshield wipers to scrape the snow and frost off of the windshield. This is a great way to ruin a perfectly good pair of windshield wipers.

Another good way to ruin your windshield wipers in the winter is to use them to remove ice. I usually turn on the car, and use the windshield wiper fluid to wet the ice. Then I turn on the wipers and watch the fun. This is not the best approach and I do not recommend it at all, but I tend to think that things will work out better if I try just one more time. I usually end up with disfigured windshield wipers.

You can damage your windshield wipers in the summer, too. I don’t fall into the habit of turning on the windshield wipers when the windshield is bone dry. That is my husband’s job. I don’t know why, but he doesn’t use the fluid when he turns on the windshield wipers just to remove dirt. The fluid helps. I guess that I can stand this windshield wiper faux pas if he can stand mine. After all, he does do the auto part shopping in the home.

Sock Knitting Machine

Unless you live in Miami or Hawaii, you’ve probably worn a pair of socks at sometime in your life. Most of us wear socks that we purchase in the clothing department at a local men’s or women’s wear store. However, back in the days before you were born, socks were usually made on a sock knitting machine.

It’s very much what it sounds; a machine whose purpose is to knit socks. Wearing a pair of wool socks doesn’t seem terribly appealing but they certainly did their job of keeping people’s feet very warm in the cold winter months.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone who still uses one of these machines to make socks for their family. You will however often see a sock knitting machine in antique shops and at estate sales. Depending on the quality and condition of the machine it may even be operational.

Another place where people often stumble upon a treasure like this is in the attic of an elderly family member. Perhaps your grandmother or great-grandmother even held onto some old sock knitting patterns. If her machine is still working, you can do some sock knitting for yourself to get a sense of her life when she was younger.

When you go get your hands on a machine like this you can have it restored if that’s your desire. Many companies specialize in the repair of sock knitting machines and they can also perform routine maintenance on them to keep them in running condition.

If you are purchasing a machine from an antique shop they will often have the original documents that came when the machine was first manufactured. From a collector standpoint this is a treasured find as it can significantly increase the value of the knitting machine.

In the event that you don’t get an instructional manual when you buy one, it’s really not that difficult to understand how they operate. In fact, you’ll probably find it so easy and so much fun that your enjoyment alone will encourage other members of your family to join in the fun and to do some sock knitting of their own. Don’t be surprised if the teenagers in the home ask for a sock knitting machine lesson too.

Past generations can offer us so much in the way of understanding how people lived centuries ago. Items like a sock knitting machine give us a glimpse into a past that was much simpler than it is now, when people took great care and joy in everyday things we now take for granted.
