Artificail Flowers

Everyone has different and unique ideas for decorating the spaces where they live and work. One decorating idea that I feel is over used is the use of artificial flowers. There are many people that will spend a great deal of money to find artificial flowers to place in their home; however I have never cared for them. I would rather use natural items to enhance an area.

Artificial flowers appear cheap to me. I know that people spend a great deal of money on them but it does not take long for them to accumulate dust and to fade in color. By using natural items the colors last longer. By natural items I am referring to plant materials that have been dried to preserve them. There are several plants that dry very well and can be arranged to create permanent bouquets or can be placed in decorative baskets or on wreaths.

Hydrangeas dry very well and will last for two to three years in the dried state. Roses and baby’s breath can also be dried and arranged to create permanent decorations. The dried flowers can be purchased or you can dry them yourself. The dried flowers are only slightly more expensive than artificial flowers and are much more attractive.

Recently we were invited to two weddings on the same day. One wedding began at 2:00 in the afternoon and the other began at 6:00. Neither wedding involved a relative so we thought we would be able to attend both events. It would take us about 30 minutes to drive from one location to the other.

The first wedding was the daughter of one of my co-workers. This co-worker has her office filled with artificial flowers. She takes a great deal of pride in letting everyone know that she has arranged these artificial flowers herself. I was not surprised to see that the bride, as well as the wedding party had artificial flowers. You could tell at first glance that the bouquets were made with artificial flowers because of the colors. I have never understood why people want to have permanent wedding bouquets.

The second wedding featured real flowers. The bouquets and corsages were beautiful and added a detail of elegance that was missing at the first wedding. The wedding cake was also decorated with real flowers, as were the guest tables. The fresh flowers added color and warmth to the reception area. Fresh flowers may not last forever, however they do bring happiness and elegance for the period of time that the do last.

Flavored Coffee

Welcome to the era of flavored coffee. Did you ever think back when you were a little kid that the old coffee pots would practically be replaced by lattes and cappuccinos? Okay, this would obviously depend on how old you are. Being a 90s generation guy myself, I certainly saw the explosion of flavored coffee and Starbucks. How could anyone miss it? In fact, I never even tried a coffee drink until they became all the rage. I grew up watching my parents gulp down drip coffee every morning. That did not look desirable to me. However, these days coffee has definitely taken many new turns. With coffee houses galore on every street corner, you have quite the selection of caffeinated beverages to choose from.

Do you drink flavored coffee? Now this can be interpreted in different ways. If you are java savvy, like most people are these days, then you probably know about the various syrups you can add to your latte or cappuccino. However, you can also purchase flavored coffee beans. This way, if you have an espresso machine in your home, you can simply dump some flavored coffee beans in the grinder and indulge in the java of your choice. My wife can’t get enough of the flavored coffee craze. She loves all those crazy flavors such as; brown sugar brule, Boston cream pie, and German chocolate. These actually seem to be more popular today than good old-fashioned espresso blend.

If you are one of the many who head out to the local coffee house on a daily basis, then you’ve probably tried a few of the standard flavored coffees. Some specialty coffee places will actually let you choose the beans that go into your perfect latte. You got to love that kind of service. However, most people simply acquire their flavored coffee by adding syrup. A variety of these syrups can be purchased almost anywhere now days. You can browse your local super market for common ones like Irish cream, hazelnut, and vanilla. I’ve noticed that these are the most common. If you haven’t conformed to flavored coffee yet, then it’s at least time to take a sip. You may discover that ideal caffeinated beverage you always dreamed of. Even if you prefer a drip coffee each morning, you can add flavor to these just as easy. The flavored coffee trend is simply for everyone.

Toothache

Hooray, that annual trip to the dentist is almost here. You’ve been anxiously awaiting it; right? Maybe you have a toothache, and you want the “drill man” to take a quick poke around in your mouth for possible decay. Yikes! This is killing me just talking about it. I simply can’t stand visiting the dentist. And we all know that it’s much worse to venture in there with a nasty toothache. The mere thought of a cavity and the dreadful scream of that drill. Okay, does anyone else want to break that drill? It’s pretty much official; we all hate the drill. The sad truth is we just have to take good care of our choppers so the drill won’t become an issue.

Have you ever suffered from a dull, painful toothache? Oh, I have to admit, I’ve certainly been there before. Each time it’s happened, I thought for sure it was a cavity. Come on, what else could it be? Well, in reality it could be a number of things. I recall one time I had a toothache and went to the dentist to help me out. It turned out that part of a filling had broken off. Yes! No cavity. That’s all I could really think about at the time. Another culprit for that irksome toothache is exposed roots. Sometimes we brush a little too hard and expose those roots at the base of our gum-line’s, which can allow cold liquids into sensitive places. This will result in a toothache. The key to avoiding this painful dilemma is proper oral hygiene. You want to make sure that you brush after each meal, but gently. This is key. Okay, I know what you’re thinking; how can I brush when I’m not at home? Well, at least strive to brush in the morning and at night. Doing this in addition to daily flossing will dramatically reduce your chances of acquiring any cavities or toothaches. I always recommend that everyone use a fluoride rinse once each day. This will help strengthen your choppers for a longer lifespan without dental work.

If you do have a nasty toothache, then inevitably you must head to the dentist. Unless this toothache goes away rather quickly, you’ll want to consult your dentist for a remedy. If you don’t seek professional assistance, your simple toothache could turn into something much more. Let’s face it, a trip to the dentist is no picnic, but an eternal toothache is much worse.

Beatrix Potter Crib Bedding

It seems that the idea of gift registries has really caught on. It used to be that a bride and groom would register their china, stem ware and flatware patterns so guests could help them purchase their set of tableware. This expanded to include kitchen needs as well as towels and bed linens. Now a couple can register for anything they want or need in a wide range of stores. Most stores from exclusive department and specialty stores to super discount stores offer a bridal registry. Bridal registries then expanded into baby registries for when a couple was pregnant. They could write down everything they needed and wanted for the baby. Now many toy stores offer gift registries for children at holiday time so grandparents, friends and relatives will know what to buy the child. I guess it is the modern day version of a letter to Santa Claus.

My mother and I were invited to my nieces, her grand-daughter’s baby shower. The invitation included a list of stores where she had registered for gifts. She has always been quite materialistic so I was not surprised that she had registered at four different stores. Mom and I decided to go shopping together. We went to a department store where my niece had registered. The registry was seven pages long. Included in her list of wants was beatrix potter crib bedding. My mom had said on our way to the store that she wanted to purchase bedding as her gift. She feels this is more practical than clothing. The Beatrix Potter crib bedding was sold out at this store. The salesperson told us that the new shipment would be in within a week. We did not find anything else off the registry that was within the price range we wanted to spend so we went to another store. As we were walking my mom was complaining that she did not even know what half the stuff on the registry was. At the next store I went to print off the registry. Mom said she would meet me in the infant section of the store. When I got to the infant section mom was holding a set of Beatrix Potter crib bedding. She showed me the bedding and said she though the Peter Cottontail sheets were quite so she was going to buy them. She also said they were on sale. I explained to mom that Beatrix Potter wrote Peter Cottontail and this was the crib bedding that her grand daughter wanted. This struck both of us as very funny. She said she had no idea what she was looking for at the other store when the clerk told us they were sold out. My niece was very pleased with her gift from grandma.

Gillette Safety Razor

I’ve been using Gillette safety razors ever since I started shaving. As the people who invented the safety razor and marketed it for the first time back in 1901, they do seem to know a little something about shaving razors and shaving products.

The Gillette safety razor I’m using these days is their Mach 3 razor. It’s a little dated I supposed, and there’s newer models out there like the Fusion and whatnot but I’m still very happy with my Mach 3. Three blades is enough in my opinion, and I think some of the newer Gillette safety razors are getting a little carried away. The fusion has five blades on one side, then and an additional single blade on the other. The single blade idea is a nice touch, as you can get into those tight spaces better.

The only problem with Gillette safety razors is that their all pretty expensive. The Gillette safety razors themselves aren’t usually too much money, but the additional replacement blades cost a small fortune. If you are like me and have a thick beard, you can easily go through a lot of blades every month, so the costs add up.

A few years ago I thought I could cut down overheard expense costs a little by looking into some alternatives to the Gillette safety razor lineup. First of all, there aren’t that many alternatives that aren’t actually owned by Gillette. Gillette is a monster of a company, owning a lot of other companies and pretty much ruling the safety razor market. I suppose this is only fair since they invented the safety razor, but they have a near monopoly on quality shaving products.

Anyway, I wound up buying a bag of cheap throw away razors made by some generic and obscure company whose name I cannot even recall now but I’m pretty sure they weren’t owned by Gillette. While the blades were considerably cheaper, never in my life had shaving been more painful and difficult. A solid, well made safety razor is worth the extra money; after a week of using the cheap ones I was covered in nicks and cuts.

So even though they seem to be a little pricey, I’m pretty much a loyal fan of Gillette safety razors. I’ll probably make the plunge and try their new Fusion razor as soon as I run out of Mach 3 blades.
