Leather Dog Collars Facts

Filed Under (Info) by admin on 30-06-2007

My husband and I have a side business of training dogs. We specialize in training retrievers for hunting. When at all possible we train the owners at the same time as the dogs. Through the years I have been surprised how many people have ill fitting collars on their pets. There is a great variety in collars available. We have found that the best type to purchase is leather dog collars. They last a long time and seem to be comfortable for the dogs.

Leather dog collars come in a variety of lengths and widths. It is important to purchase a collar that is wide enough that it will not cut into the skin, but yet not be so wide that the dog is limited in their movements. Many people make the mistake of purchasing leather dog collars in longer lengths than are needed for puppies. They think that the puppy will grow into the collar. The puppy most likely will, however having too long of a tag end can result in the puppy getting caught on things. If people do not have enough money to have proper fitting leather dog collars for the puppy, we suggest buying a cheaper nylon collar for the puppy. Once the puppy has reached its adult size the leather dog collars can be purchased to insure proper fit.

Many people like the option of using a choke collar on their dogs, especially for training to walk on a leash. We recommend using a choke collar only during training and then switching back to the leather dog collars or the collars made of nylon. The reason for this recommendation is that the metal choke collar is cold in the winter and can also discolor the dog’s fur, especially when the fur gets wet. Retrievers spend a great deal of time in the water so their fur is wet often.

The main disadvantage of leather dog collars is that they can develop an odor from the oils in the dog’s coat. Frequently cleaning the collar with leather cleaner helps reduce the odor and also increases the life of the leather. We often remove the collars when our dogs are in the water. This preserves the collar and reduces the risk that they could get snagged on something in the water. When your dog is well trained you do not have to rely on controlling them with their collar. A well trained dog responds to verbal commands. A collar is needed so the dog can be identified if he is lost, and to walk with a leash, it should not be your means to control behaviors.

Clear Plastic Bags

I am in the process of trying to organize my home. I think that my life will be simpler if I have things in order. I decided to start with my kitchen area. My thought was that if I have a kitchen that is better organized my meal preparations will take less time. If I am spending less time preparing meals I will have additional time to organize other areas of the home. I started by going to the store to purchase containers, space savers and other supplies that I thought would help in the project.

I went to a kitchen store that sells many organization aides. I explained to the clerk that I have a small kitchen and very limited counter space, so I did not want to purchase canisters, but I did want to have something for my staples, flour, sugar, spices and so forth. She suggested using clear plastic bags. She then showed me the newest product that they have in the store. The simple product is a plastic rectangle that you place in the bottom of clear plastic bags. The rectangle acts as a stand for the clear plastic bags, so they stay upright. This can be used with standard clear plastic bags, or you can purchase bags that are of heavier weight that are made to go with the stands. The clear plastic bags that come with the stands have the easy close zipper tops as well as a pressed seal. The double sealing system as well as the heavier plastic was intended to last longer than the average clear plastic bags. There were a number of sizes of rectangles as well as several sizes of clear plastic bags. The clerk said she stores cereal this way so her children can see the selection and she knows when she is running low. I decided to purchase several sizes of the rectangles as well as the clear plastic bags. I also found stackable shelves and a spice organizer that I thought would help with my project.

I brought my purchases home and started working. I took everything out of the cabinets that I use for food storage. I washed out all the shelving and put my flour, sugar and cereals into the clear plastic bags that I had purchased. I then converted my spices into the spice organizer. Several of the older spices I discarded and started a list of what I needed to replace. With my new organization system I had an extra shelf left. The added space made the rest of the kitchen organization go very quickly.

Now that my kitchen space is organized I find that it does take me less time to prepare meals. My next project is to organize the linen closet and under the sink cabinet space in the bathrooms.

Hip Replacement Facts

For years, hip replacement surgery has been a common solution for elderly individuals suffering from rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well as other conditions, injuries and diseases. However, hip replacement has become a more common treatment option for younger individuals with these conditions as well, and is no longer limited primarily to older and less active individuals.

In most cases surgery is not the first option recommended by a physician. Other alternatives, such as physical therapy and walking aids are often used as long as possible before a patient undergoes hip replacement. In some cases, anti-inflammatories and medications such as cortisone are also used as alternative treatments to hip replacement surgery.

The procedure involves removing damaged or diseased cartilage and bone from the hip. The parts of the hip which allow wide ranges of movement, the acetabulum and the femur, are replaced with artificial parts. In some surgeries, the artificial parts are cemented, and in other cases they are made of porous materials so that the patient’s own bone will grow to hold them in place.

Generally, an operation is considered necessary when other forms of treatment have failed to relieve pain and other symptoms. As with all surgeries, there are risks to hip replacement including blood clots. More common risks are inflammation and hip dislocation.

Movement should be limited immediately following surgery, although patients are required to begin some activities immediately both to promote healing and to with the effects of the anesthetic used during surgery. Most patients will remain in the hospital for several days.

Post-operative care will include physical therapy and pain medications. Physical therapy will focus on teaching the patient the limitation of the artificial hip replacement, and will teach them the proper ways to bend, sit, walk and generally go about daily living with some new limitations.

While exercise remains an important part of daily life, people who have undergone hip replacement are expected to avoid high-impact activity. Recommended options for exercise can include walking and swimming, which provide cardiovascular benefits without undue strain on the hip replacement.

Patients are encouraged to prepare their homes for their return prior to surgery. This includes setting up an area with easy access to many of the things the patient will need for entertainment during the first several days home from the hospital, moving kitchen items within easy reach, setting up a shower chair and removing anything on floor surfaces that could cause slipping or tripping.

With proper preparation and attention to all post-operative instructions, hip replacement patients can return to a normal and active lifestyle in spite of some limitations.

Christmas Lights

I am a Christmas fanatic. Each year as the holidays approach I tell myself that this year I will check through all of my Christmas storage prior to making any new purchases. But then I will be out shopping and will see a pre-season sale and cannot pass up the bargain. It seems that each year the Christmas merchandise hits the shelves earlier. Last year on Labor Day weekend when I was searching through the school supply aisle I noticed that the Christmas lights were displayed in the next aisle. It seems that the same day that the Halloween Candy goes on clearance is the same day that the Christmas candy goes on the shelves.

Last year I did not pass up the pre-season Christmas lights. They were a very good deal and I could not remember if the Christmas lights from the year before worked or not. Of course when I did take decorations out of storage I found that I had purchased new Christmas lights at a clearance sale at the end of the previous season. My husband often reminds me that I need to check what I have prior to buying more because we are running out of storage space. Last year I was glad that I had the extra Christmas lights because the old strand was burned out. We did not even try to locate why the strand did not light we simply used all the new ones. I told my husband that we should buy new lights each year and donate the old ones to the school. Each year the school is looking for lights to use at dances, proms and plays. By donating the lights they will go to a good cause and we do not have to store them and then try to untangle them each year. It is so much easier to decorate with new lights because they are not tangled and they all light.

The Christmas lights that we use outdoors are more expensive so we put in more effort in packing them so that they do not tangle. This is not always easy because the weather is usually bitterly cold when we put the outdoor lights away. My husband cannot tolerate having the lights stay on the house once the holiday season is over. He will never be one of the home owners that leave the holiday lights on the house year round. He enjoys looking at light displays and he enjoys decorating our home and yard, but after News Years Day he insists that the decorations go back into storage.

I am going to try to resists the sales this year until I go through the storage area. I know that we did donate the Christmas lights that we used last year, but I do not remember if I bought more at the end of the season sales.
